What?

World Eating Disorders Action Day was founded in 2014 by a small group of parents and impacted individuals who recognized the need for a global movement to unite around correct evidence-based information about eating disorders and be a platform for action. June 2 is now globally recognized as a day for awareness and action. Members of the eating disorder community, including affected individuals and their families, professionals, researchers and policy makers, have united virtually to increase access to accurate information, eradicate myths and collectively advocate for resources and policy change. World Eating Disorders Action Day takes place annually on June 2 around the globe, with both ‘live’ events, policy actions and virtual activity.

Why?

Eating disorders are serious, treatable illnesses that result from a complex interplay of genetics, biology and environment. Eating disorders affect up to 70 million people globally, including people of all genders, ages, racial and ethnic identities, nationalities and documentation status, abilities, sizes, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness, yet many go untreated despite the fact that new research and treatment approaches are show positive and effective results for full recovery.

How?

Through virtual and country-specific activism, World Eating Disorders Action Day advances the understanding of eating disorders as treatable genetically-linked illnesses that affect a large cross-section of the world’s population, embraces diversity, and raises awareness amongst policymakers to allocate resources and establish coherent national systems. World Rating Disorders Action Day offers new connections and global partnerships, grows the advocacy base and creates opportunities for additional actions for change at local and global level.

Who is Involved?

Over 200 organizations from more than 50 countries and 1000s of activists from around the world engage each year to take action. In 2026 a Planning Committee comprised of leaders drawn from global organizations graciously has provided guidance on the theme and activities.

If you would like to be involved as a Participating Organization and be featured here, please see our Participation Principles.
